A two-story addition brought new surgical suites, sterile processing, and support spaces to a hospital campus that stayed open throughout construction. APAI led the electrical scope from preconstruction through turnover, working alongside the general contractor and facility engineering staff to keep existing departments in service while the new wing was built and energized.
Project Scope
Normal and essential power distribution, generator and transfer switch tie-ins, lighting and controls, fire alarm rough-in, and low-voltage pathways for the new addition, plus reconnection of the existing corridors it opened into.
The Challenge
Every tie-in touched a live hospital. Outages had to be scheduled around surgical calendars, infection-control barriers limited access, and long-lead switchgear had to be tracked closely to protect the turnover date.
The Approach
We built the outage plan during preconstruction, coordinated overhead routing with mechanical and plumbing before rough-in, and staged each shutdown with facility engineering so affected departments knew the scope and duration in advance.
The Outcome
The addition was energized and turned over on the contract date, with no unplanned interruption to clinical operations and no rework on the essential power system at commissioning.
